O'Grady was born in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She was a graduate of North High School of Wheaton. In commercials, she appeared prior to moving from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. The first role she had was to model in the company of Montgomery Ward. She also appeared in several advertisements. She made her debut on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy She's Having a Baby. She was later cast in a recurring role in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in several programs. She appeared in both independent and made for TV movies. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police thriller NYPD Blue. O'Grady played the secretary with long hair of the squad between 1993 and the year 1996. Her nomination was in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama each year. Along with her ensemble, she won an award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, for the Best Performance by an Ensemble in Drama Series.
