O'Neil was a contestant on her third series of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still in high school. She was able to advance to the 100th round since the judges were impressed with her performances. O'Neil received high praise by judges, but she suffered major losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 in both cases. They were stunned by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the lower three ever again. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil would be the winner in her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and the youngest contestant in history after the 7th September Finals of 2005. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
